Half silk is a blend of silk and cotton. In Bangladesh the name is used for sarees that have some of the shine and richer hand of silk, while staying lighter, cooler and easier to look after than pure silk.
What it looks and feels like
- Sheen: a soft shine that catches the light, less than pure silk.
- Hand: smooth, slightly crisp.
- Drape: firmer than muslin; pleats stay sharp.
- Weather: comfortable in warm weather, more so than pure silk.
Best for
Weddings as a guest, evening events, Pohela Boishakh and formal occasions, where you want some shine without the weight of a silk saree.
Care
Dry cleaning is safest for the first few washes. After that, hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, dry in the shade and iron on the reverse at low to medium heat. More in our saree care guide.
