Caring for Block-Printed and Handloom Sarees

Simple washing, drying, ironing and storage steps that keep block prints bright and handloom cotton soft for years.

Hand-printed and handwoven sarees last a long time if you treat them gently. None of this takes much effort; it just helps to know what the fabric likes.

Washing

  • Wash the first time on its own. Hand-printed colours can release a little dye in the first wash, especially reds.
  • Use cold water and a mild detergent. Hot water and strong powders fade prints faster.
  • Hand wash, don't wring. Swish gently, then press the water out instead of twisting the fabric.
  • Half silk: dry cleaning is the safest choice for the first few washes.

Drying

  • Dry in the shade. Strong direct sun fades colour, especially on dark sarees like Tomashree.
  • Hang it flat over a line or rod rather than pinning it at one point, so it keeps its shape.

Ironing

  • Iron on the reverse side, at low to medium heat.
  • For half silk and semi muslin, iron while the fabric is still very slightly damp, or put a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree.

Storing

  • Fold it and wrap it in a plain cotton cloth or muslin. Avoid plastic covers; fabric needs to breathe.
  • Refold along different lines every few months so the creases don't wear the threads.
  • Spray perfume on yourself before you dress, not on the saree.

Handloom cotton, like our Monipuri sarees, gets softer with every wash. That is the fabric settling in, not wearing out.
