What Does "13.5 Haat" Mean? Saree Lengths Explained

Haat is the traditional Bengali measure for sarees. What 12, 13.5 and 14 haat mean in metres, and which of our sarees come in each length.

In Bangladesh, saree lengths are usually given in haat (হাত), the traditional measure based on the length of a forearm from elbow to fingertip. One haat is about 18 inches, or roughly 46 centimetres.

Which length do you need?

  • 12 haat is the standard length and drapes comfortably on most people in the usual Nivi style.
  • 13.5 to 14 haat gives you extra fabric for deeper pleats, a longer achol, or a different draping style. It also helps if you are taller.

About the blouse piece

Our Monipuri sarees come with an unstitched blouse piece included in the 13.5 haat length, so you can have a matching blouse made by your tailor.
