Both tie-dye and batik are resist-dyeing methods: something stops the dye from reaching parts of the cloth, and those parts form the pattern.
Tie-dye
The cloth is gathered and tied tightly with thread before dyeing. The tied parts stay pale, giving circles, rings and bursts of colour.
Batik
Hot wax is drawn or stamped onto the cloth. The waxed areas resist the dye; afterwards the wax is removed. Batik often shows fine crackle lines where dye seeped into cracks in the wax.
Shibori
A Japanese family of resist techniques using folding, twisting, binding and stitching. Our Sagarmita saree is shibori; read more in Shibori.
