Shibori

Shibori

Shibori is a Japanese resist-dyeing method: the cloth is folded, twisted, bound or stitched before dyeing. How it works and the Barindra saree made with it.

Shibori is a Japanese way of dyeing cloth by hand. Before the fabric goes into the dye it is folded, twisted, bound or stitched, so the parts pressed tight resist the dye and stay pale. When the bindings come off, the pattern appears.

How to recognise it

  • Soft-edged lines and shapes rather than sharp printed edges.
  • Colour that shades gently from deep to pale.
  • Patterns that repeat but never exactly, because every fold is made by hand.

Shibori and tie-dye

Shibori is one family of resist dyeing. Tie-dye and batik are others; see Tie-dye and batik.
